The famous Spanish artist Salvador Dali (1904 - 1989) was one of Marshall McLuhan's contemporaries ...

... Drawing is the honesty of the art. There is no possibility of cheating. It is either good or bad ... (Salvador Dali)

my french canadian uncle interviewed dali and said this of the man that i adored. 'he is a charlatan. very good at technique but without the genius of picasso. he markets himself well with all his absurd waxed moustache and his bulging eyes and his cloak, but he has only one interest and that is too make vast amounts of money.'

personally i loved dali.

I think your uncle was right in a certain sense! Dali was a "show man" and he was also a sympathizer of the fascists and Nazis of his time. He denied also to have been Federico Garcia Lorca's boyfriend after Lorca was murdered by the Spanish fascists and so on ... he wss a "bad hat" but I think it is impossible to compare Dali with Picasso :-) who have been good friends! Picasso has also been a "charlatan" in a way and if there haven't been Gertrude Stein and Peggy Guggenheim at that time in Paris nobody knows how the things would have been gone on with this generation of painters :-)
At that time Art started to go whoring with the market :-)
Picasso, for example said: "You have to take the chance by the COCK", so he went to Diaghelev and became a member of "The Ballet Russe"although he was "straight" :-) and so on ...

Yes I like a lot of his work too! After his death I've seen a great exhibition of his original paintings and drawings in Munich and I was amazed ...
