ASLEEP IN THE VALLEY / by ARTHUR RIMBAUD

ASLEEP IN THE VALLEY

Here in this bosky pit a singing creek
Snags wildly at the grass with rags of bright
Silver; the sun, from the proud mountain's peak,
Shines: here's a little valley, bubbling light.

A young recruit, bare-headed and slack-jawed,
His nape bathed in the cool blue watercress,
Sleeps; under clouds, he sprawls, pale on the sod,
Where sunlight rains down on his bed of grass.

Feet in the flowers, he dozes. With a smile
Like a sick child's smile, he takes his rest.
He's cold: Ah, Nature, keep him warm awhile!

The odors here don't make his nostrils flare;
He sleeps beneath the sun; upon his chest,
His hand is tranquil. Two red holes are there.
